Youth
for Human
Rights
International
held a
special
event on
March 25,
2002, at
the Church
of Scientology
Celebrity
Centre
International.
The occasion
was the
celebration
of the
release
of a new
booklet
for youth: “What
are Human
Rights?” This
booklet
introduces
human rights
to youth
and illustrates
the United
Nations
Universal
Declaration
of Human
Rights.
The event
was held
in support
of the
United
Nations
Decade
for Human
Rights
Education.
Lynsey
Bartilson,
teenage
star of
the Fox
TV show “Grounded
for Life,” made
an important
announcement:
her promise
for human
rights
was to
become
the Spokesperson
for Youth
for Human
Rights
International.
Well-known
human rights
activist
Irving
Sarnoff,
Founder
of Friends
of the
United
Nations,
Rev. Leonard
Jackson
from the
The First
African
Methodist-Episcopal
Church
and representatives
from the
American
Iranian
Friendship
Association
and UNICEF's
Los Angeles
Regional
Office
also addressed
the crowd.
Andrik
Schapers
and Kids
on Stage
for a Better
World led
the way
to the
creation
of the
Tree of
Promises.
Event speakers
and attendees
made their
own promise
to youth,
each one
on a paper
leaf, and
came on
stage to
hang it
on the
tree. The
Tree of
Promises,
initially
leafless,
rapidly
became
a tree
full of
life and
commitment.
