From the Editor

Alexis MathesHello again! One of the things I love about art is that you can be in control of your own creations. If you want the sky to be purple, you can make it purple. If you want it to be green in can be green. Being able to decide exactly what I want to do and make my own decisions makes me happy. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone had this luxury?

This is what freedom of thought is all about. Sometimes people want to believe something – but others won’t let them. How can anyone be happy if they are told how they must think? Would you?

Telling someone how to think and what to believe is a violation of Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states: “18. Freedom of thought. We all have the right to believe in what we want to believe, to have a religion, or to change it if we want.”

This is what Youth for Human Rights International is all about. We all need to take responsibility for enforcing these rights for everyone.
Let me know your thoughts on this.

TALENTED YHRI ARTISTS
REACH FINALS IN ART CONTEST

—By Alexis Matthes

Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) held an art contest encouraging children to express what human rights means to them. Art plays a very important role in the evolution of life. It touches, entertains and inspires us all.

Look at what Claude Monet and Salvador Dali (famous European painters during the Renaissance period) did to inspire people through their art.

The art these children have created can inspire us all to follow along the path of human rights, to set an example at all times and to impress upon others to do the same.

He has starred in two TV series and has an upcoming series as well. Tyler has been nominated for one of the most prestigious awards in Canada, the Gemini Award, and has starred along such names as Kirstie Alley, Andie McDowell, Tim Roth, Steve Guttenburg and Mariel Hemmingway, to name a few, in a variety of feature films and TV movies. Tyler is perhaps best known in his country for his leading role in the movie “Tagged: The Jonathan Wamback Story”. This is a powerful story about teenager and real-life hero, Jonathan Wamback, who was severely beaten when he stood up school bullies. Tyler states that it was through this experience that he became more sensitive to these issues. While in L.A. this past winter, Tyler was introduced to Youth For Human Rights International. He has not looked back since!

On his return to Ottawa, Canada, in the spring, Tyler went to Toronto where he attended a benefit dinner for the Canadian Crime Victims Foundation which was founded by the Wamback family. He then held an informal information session with over 20 prominent Toronto community leaders to let them know about YHRI. As a result, many stepped forward to volunteer and a board of directors was formed that night.

The following week Tyler, along with his brother Brandon, went to Mother Teresa Catholic School in Ottawa and gave their first school lesson on human rights to 150 eager students. Tyler also met with Senator Di Nino in the Parliament buildings in Ottawa and briefed him about YHRI and the need to teach children throughout Canada.

Tyler states: “One of our main goals is to have ALL Canadian children taught the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as part of the curriculum. Canada has always been known as a peace keeping nation, helping to take care of the rest of the world. I am proud of this and want to continue this trend, making human rights a fact in Canada!

TOP YHRI TICKET SELLER

In early October YHRI is holding a very special event in Los Angeles, in honor of Youth for Human Rights International Day, which was first proclaimed by the City of Los Angeles on October 1st 2004.
At the same time we are holding our annual Youth for Human Rights International Summit where young leaders from around the world will join together. This takes funding of course. So the YHRI Youth Executive Council is selling raffle tickets.

Here are the members of our newest YHRI Club– Quebec, Canada!

The idea to form the club came from the Public Affairs representative of the Church of Scientology of Quebec. Well done on being the first – and setting such a great example. Which area in Canada will form the second club?

What are Human Rights?

Every person is entitled to certain rights — simply by the fact that they are a human being. They are “rights” because they are things you are allowed to be, to do or to have. These rights are there for your protection against people who might want to harm or hurt you. They are also there to help us get along with each other and live in peace.
