Part One — What are Human Rights?

Purpose — To give you a general understanding of human rights, to introduce the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and explain where it came from and to briefly look at the state of human rights in the world.

Section 1: What are Human Rights?

1. Human means: Having to do with or belonging to people in general.

2. Rights means: Something you are allowed to be. Something you are allowed to do or receive; a freedom to do something.

3. Read the following paragraph from What are Human Rights?:

“Every person is entitled to certain rights — simply by the fact that they are a human being. They are ‘rights’ because they are things you are allowed to be, to do or to have. These rights are there for your protection against people who might want to harm or hurt you. They are also there to help us get along with each other and live in peace. There are thirty basic Human Rights and we will explain them in this booklet.”

4. Write a paragraph or more about what human rights mean to you and why they are important. Include artwork such as a photograph, drawing or poem that demonstrates a human right. Send these in to tracie@scientology.net or using regular mail as covered here.
